Out with the old in with the new?

As I sat down to write my bi-weekly blog, I found myself at a loss for inspiration. I had so much to say yet struggled to pinpoint exactly what I wanted to express or how to share it. My thoughts and feelings felt scattered, and in that moment, I decided to embrace silence. I turned inward, focusing on what I could control—myself.

Like many of you, I spend much of my time giving. Especially during the holiday season, we pour so much of ourselves into others that we often end up feeling depleted, stretched too thin, and at times, even used. As I reflect, I realize that while I find inspiration in the world and in others, what I truly needed was a moment to find inspiration within myself. I longed for a small piece of me that wasn’t shared with anyone else—something that was just mine.

This year has been one of profound loss and transformation. I have faced heartbreak in more ways than one, from the passing of my father to the traumatic experience of Hurricane Helene. Through these challenges, I found myself forced to confront the person staring back at me in the mirror. I didn’t run from the reflection. I stayed. I looked at myself fully, facing the good, the bad, and the ugly. And in doing so, I discovered something remarkable.

In the silence of self-reflection, everything became dark and still. But as I journeyed through the darkness, I began to see light—a light of understanding, healing, and self-discovery. It taught me that self-care isn’t just about indulgence or surface-level pampering. It’s about finding the practices that make you whole, that allow you to embrace your authentic self. Self-care is about saying “no” when you need to, letting go when it’s time, walking away when necessary, or staying the course when that’s what’s right for you. It’s about choosing yourself in ways that bring out the best, healthiest version of who you are.

This year, I chose to embrace my full potential. I’ve decided to walk confidently into every ounce of who I am called to be, and I want to encourage you to do the same. As we prepare to step into 2025, ask yourself:

In what ways can you embody your true self and reach your full potential through self-care?

Why is self-care necessary for your growth and healing?

Here’s what I’ve learned: self-care is transformative. It’s not a luxury but a necessity, a commitment to yourself and your journey. And it’s something we can practice together. Here are some tips to help you incorporate self-care into your life:

1. Start Small: Begin with just a few minutes a day dedicated to something that nourishes you—a walk, journaling, or quiet reflection.

2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say “no” without guilt and protect your time and energy for the things that matter most to you.

3. Engage in Physical Activities: Hiking, yoga, or even simple stretches can help release tension and reconnect you with your body.

4. Prioritize Rest: Adequate sleep and downtime are essential for mental and physical well-being.

5. Nurture Your Skin and Body: Use natural, healing products that not only care for your skin but also provide a moment of relaxation and self-love.

6. Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the positives in your life to shift your perspective and build resilience.

7. Seek Community: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you, and don’t hesitate to lean on them when needed.
