Endurance: The Lessons Found in the Rain

Writer: Lakeisha LeeLakeisha Lee

I almost canceled the hike. The forecast called for rain, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend the morning soaked, guiding a group through the woods. I held off making a final decision, debating whether it was worth it. Would anyone even show up? Did I really need to push through in these conditions? But something in me knew that this wasn’t just about the weather. This was about endurance.

So, we hiked. Rain or shine.

At first, it was just a light drizzle, barely enough to be a concern. Then, the rain became steady, not overwhelming but enough to make us question things. The trail, which I assumed would be straightforward, quickly proved otherwise. Fallen trees from a hurricane months ago blocked a few paths, forcing us to adjust. I hadn’t downloaded a map beforehand because I thought we wouldn’t need one, so we were “winging it”, trusting our instincts and each other. We weren’t lost, but we weren’t exactly on a clear path either.

Instead of frustration, there was laughter. Instead of giving up, we adjusted. We climbed over branches, rerouted where we needed to, and kept pushing forward. We weren’t just hiking—we were problem-solving, embracing the unexpected, and finding joy in the challenge. At one point, someone turned to me and said, “Thank you for this. You don’t just help us hike—you help us endure.”

And that’s when it hit me.

This is what self-care is about. It’s not just about the relaxing moments, the spa days, or the perfect morning routine. It’s about learning how to push through, how to adjust when life throws obstacles in the way, and how to find joy even when things don’t go as planned. Life will always be unpredictable. There will be rain. There will be setbacks. There will be moments when we don’t have a clear map, and we just have to figure it out as we go. But if we let those things stop us, what are we really doing? Are we waiting for perfect conditions to live? Or are we willing to embrace the unknown and keep moving forward?

That’s when I realized—this is why I lead these hikes. Not just because I love nature, but because I help people endure. Self-care isn’t just about comfort; it’s about building resilience. It’s about showing up, even when the conditions aren’t ideal. It’s about proving to yourself that you are stronger than you think.

So the next time you hesitate because things aren’t perfect, ask yourself: If the answer is yes, don’t wait for the rain to stop. Lace up your boots, step onto the trail, and keep going. Because sometimes, the best moments happen when you decide to hike anyway.
